Major themes expressed by writers in Voices of Freedom book include the theme of slavery and theme of liberation. In all accounts, the slaves were held captives in a foreign land and were subject to use in plantations, homes, industries, and marketplace. Slavery is the main theme and is evidenced by slaves been held against their wishes. The slaves are influenced and inspired by other people and their work to flee and escape slavery. The slaves desire to be liberated. Some of the slaves read materials with increase their hope for liberation while others have the will to escape and set themselves free. The main reason the authors want to flee is to find freedom and a place they can freely live without being coerced.
Slaves encounter harsh conditions: they are worked like machines and have no voice of their own. Slaves according the authors had to follow what their masters said. They could be sold like property and used without payment. Most of work assigned to slaves was inhumane and diminishing. Slaves could work in the mines, plantations, and factories among other places without pay or any reward for their labor.
One form of resistance is contempt to escape/flee: some of the authors were planning to flee from the land of slavery and denounce slavery, and move to the north. Some authors applied the gospel to win the confidence of masters especially when masters were troubled and use this opportunity to manipulate masters. For instance, if a master had a health problem, a slave would use this opportunity to preach the gospel to the master and convince them that they would prevail.
