I belong to Amish subculture. My group is a subculture because our values and norms are totally distinct from those of America mainstream culture which are held by a group in a wider society. It is a subculture more so because the Amish group in which I belong has totally refused to adopt customs, lifestyle and norms of a broader society. The mainstream culture embrace individualism but Amish culture is in disagreement because we believe that individualism will sway us away from devotion to God.
Amish group wear very simple clothes whereby men are all wearing white shirts and black hats while women are all wearing white bonnets and black dresses which is different from what the general public are wearing. Amish view other communities as a threat to their culture and religion and hence we have to always do all means to live as a separate community. Amish people have separate churches, schools and a unique culture.
Amish people are caution to adhere to their unique practices and norms wherever they go so that we cannot be swallowed by the secular world. If resources could have been enough within Amish arena, then there could not be any Amish member who could be allowed to detach himself/herself from the rest of the group. Amish member who has gone against our way of life cannot be allowed to eat a meal with their families unless he/she repent and return.
The Amish group is not in good relationship with American mainstream culture because we perceived them as a threat to our values and norms. Amish group is trying whatever they can to separate from the rest of other people. The Amish group is widely not accepted mainly because we emphasize strict obedience rather than self-fulfillment which is view as backwardness. Amish group are seen as a deviant subculture because of being against instant gratification, individualism and consumption which are the focus of American mainstream culture.
