We had the privilege of meeting with our mentor last Monday afternoon where we informed him of our progress and get his insight on the group activities especially on the proposal which we were planning write. He suggested we make the communication part of the proposal easier. Additionally, he asked us to look at the name we are going to give our proposal so that it can show the connection of the animal health, animal freedom and the animal welfare. This is because the proposal has to communicate with the stakeholders in the industry and draw their attention on animal health. Thus, the proposal has to show the background and origin of some of the problems the producers are facing and how some of these problems can be solved through genetic and animal welfare.
Last Thursday, we had the opportunity of presenting our proposal before the panel of teaching team and get their comments on the proposal. Our proposal was very general on the 5 freedoms of the animals, common diseases and economic dynamics of these diseases. However, after meeting our mentor this Monday, he suggested that we narrow the topic and be very specific rather than working on the general topic. Furthermore, our mentor provided us with contacts (email and contact number) of chicken and dairy producers so that we can have an opportunity to research more on common diseases and welfare issues in depth. Our future plan is to meet the producers and discuss with them about the genetic diseases and welfare of the animals.
