The article “Found Beauty” written by Simona Chiodo refers to the concept of beauty and grace in architecture. It seems that 20th century changed or even ruined the notion of beauty. It is doubtable, whether it is still needed. The author argues that beauty exists and describes how it can be achieved. First of all, Chiodo provides the audience with the notion of beauty by Tatarkiewicz. According to the scientists, beauty is objective because it can be measured. The author investigates the topic more deeply and refers to philosophical category of beauty, which is subjective and depends on the viewer. As for architecture, beauty remains objective and it is proved by architects of 19th and 20th centuries.
While developing the topic, Chiodo introduces the idea by Mies van der Rohe, who wrote about incalculability of beauty. According to the scientists, it is necessary to recognize the laws of construction and not to establish them. Chiodo provides a detailed explanation of the issue. Seeking for possible laws means establishing as well as the obtaining the things. Finding is about measurement of the theoretical subject based on the practical (empirical). The seeking is vice versa process. With the principle of seeking an architect may construct an absolutely beautiful building but it would be wrong. It would mean to create only a form and its form would be its aim. A non-absolute, so as found beauty, should be achieved. It is gained by the interrelations between the parts of the construction. This means that found beauty reveals the objects, which could be something other than themselves.
The formulated notion of found beauty is related to the concept of grace. Author provides the definition of the term and explicates it further in the article. The notion can be both ethical and aesthetical. Chiodo provides an example of a marble statue, hard-working process and heaviness of the material of which are hidden by its light-weighting appearance. In this case found beauty is the same as grace. It is not absolute and it is beautiful because of its usefulness. It is compared to a house, which is beautiful because it comforts its residents.
The concept of found beauty can be also applicable to the interior design as well. Beauty is important and vital for the interior of the happy house. Issues of efficiency, security concerns and simple comfort can be better understood in the United States in the 21st century than a concept of beauty (Zukowski, 2006, p.161). Dylan Kendall also argues about the happiness and its importance to the interior design. She states that corresponding design relates to how happy person is (Kendall, 2010). An individual seeks for the comfort and forgets about the beauty that can be found. To reflect the notion of the found beauty the interior should be of course functional and useful. The design should bring happiness to dweller and it can be its purpose and it will make the interior beautiful. It should meet the requirements of an individual and serve more as just an element without any particular purpose. The object will be beautiful in Chiodo’s understanding in case it will be more than a form but also a content, which is hidden behind that form. The issue of functionality passes to this notion. Actually, the found beauty is even more important because the specific purpose is intended in constructing the appropriate interior. Optimization and harmony are key concepts of the designer (American Society of Interior Designers). This means that every object on the premises of the given space will have its function and will serve than just with its form.
