The article by Hoffman clearly demarcates the differences between the children raised by employed mothers and those that are raised by stay at home mothers. She first shows the statistical values of how more and more females have been getting employed for the last two decades, and many of them are mothers as well. The analysis then is not restricted to just children but it is also a gender-based analysis as to how the boy and the girl take after when they are under the influence of a working mother and a non-working mother. Her analysis shows that girls, whose mothers are employed, are generally more independent, confident, responsible and better in academics and co-curricular activities. They are also unaffected by the stereotypical roles of the genders. Boys, on the other hand, whose mothers work, are less brilliant academically; had lower IQ’s as compared to the ones whose mothers were housewives. They are irresponsible, and they are more likely to go astray. Those, whose mothers stay at home, also feel that it is the duty of the woman to stay at home and are generally male dominating in nature.
It is true that the influence of a mother is dominant on a child especially when the child is young. If mothers stay at home, they generally give more attention to their children, look after their every need and help their children in every issue they face, whether it is academic or otherwise. Comparatively, mothers who work cannot spare enough time to their children hence they leave quite a lot of responsibility upon them. Such children become independent at a younger age and feel more confident since they face a lot of things on their own and learn from them. Girls, who take after their mothers are surer of themselves and tend to be the responsible, caring child their mother wants hence they work hard at studies. Boys, who can get careless at times need more attention and if their mothers are not around they tend to slack and not work as hard as they should. This difference doesn’t exist among stay at home mothers.
