In December 2011, breastfeeding mothers across America staged more than 100“nurse-ins” at outlets of the major retail store Target. Their purpose was to stand in solidarity with another woman, who had been asked to move to a fitting room by store employees as she nursed her child in the store. News spread of her humiliation, and this sparked a movement in which thousands of nursing mothers exercised their rights to bare their breasts for the purpose of breastfeeding. A link to this story is at http://healthland.time.com/2011/12/27/the-nurse-in-why-breast-feeding-moms-are-mad-at-target/.
Americans have a complicated relationship with breastfeeding. On one hand, advocates of nursing are vociferous about the rights of women to nurse their babies in public. On the other hand, lots of people are made to feel embarrassed and caught off guard when they accidentally catch sight of a woman's breast in the process of feeding a baby (or toddler) while they are out trying to do their shopping.
This article relates to my area of research into the female demographic of American population. Women are considered a special interest group in America. The rights of women to breastfeed in public has been a matter of much discourse in recent years.
The pop press article sheds light on how strongly some women feel about their right to publicly breastfeed. It is different from scholarly articles in that it discusses a sociological event rather than a systematic study that examines empirical evidence. Though it is not a scientific article, it provides information about women's perspective on the social aspect of breastfeeding, which is helpful knowledge to have for my research.
