I believe that nurse leaders are not born, but made; and becoming a true nursing leader in keeping with the mission of the Chamberlain College of Nursing is no different. In fact, I decided to join the college after fully convinced of its rich heritage and mission, which is a commitment to produce empowered nurse leaders who are capable of transforming healthcare through compassion, ethics and knowledge. I am determined to fulfill the mission of Chamberlain by establishing a strong connection with my patients and team members, assuring my service characterized with unconditional love, and having a mind open to learn new things by following others on a regular basis and grow.
A best leader is always genuinely interested in his followers and clients (Carnegie, 1936). An empathizing heart helps individuals to emotionally connect with the people he serves. The noble profession of nursing is primarily about serving others not for the sake of money or becoming popular, but to extend a wholehearted support and help to the patients and their family members. Connecting with my patients and their family members would help me to understand my patients deeply that in turn would help me to understand their problems from their own perspectives, and thus help me to serve them better. Besides, the training in Chamberlain has trained me to focus on my mission as a nurse, disregarding my position or title. Even though as a nurse leader or manager, I may be required to lead a team of fellow nurses and workers, I would treat them equally as fellow colleagues and listening to their concerns and view points to give the best service to the patients under our care.
Unconditional love for others, particularly for my patients, would make me a better human being before making me a nurse leader. Unconditional love also guides a person to treat everyone equally, regardless of his social or economic status. Inculcating the habit of seeing everyone equally with unconditional love would prompt me to always treat my patients with care and a smiling face. The virtue of compassion would help me to step into the shoes of my patients and their family members to give priority to their concerns and interests always. Unconditional love for others would help me as a nurse leader in future to accept my fellow team members for what they are and what they do rather than what they are not and what they do not do. This would also help me to allocate responsibilities and develop them while considering their limitations rather than expecting the impossible from them. Unconditional love always helps me to maintain ethics in my service.
Finally, as a nurse leader responsible to provide the best healthcare services to my patients, I commit myself to follow other leaders and get inspiration from them. Historically, all great leaders are great followers as well (Maxwell, 2007). Responsible healthcare service warrants more knowledge and skills, particularly for providing evidence-based care, on the part of the service provider. Therefore, I would continue to update my knowledge and skills by, learning from others and undergoing advance training programs. Acquiring more knowledge would also equip me to serve patients effectively apart from exposing me to higher responsibilities.
In conclusion, I would uphold the rich tradition of the Chamberlain College of Nursing by always showing a genuine interest in my patients, showering them with unconditional love, and updating my knowledge and skills on a regular basis so as to completely transform healthcare through compassion, ethics and knowledge.
