Charles Turner expresses his surprise that students do not realize the essence of plagiarism. They either are not thought what plagiarism is or they have forgotten the lesson. Santi Buscemi remarks that most Ph.D. holders plagiarize without knowing what they are doing. Most student commit plagiarism unintentionally due lack of proper understanding of plagiarism. Mike Gratton observes that in pre-high school plagiarism is not a priority, but in high school and college it is dealt seriously and students are told the penalty of plagiarism. There are exercises which taught students how to extract material and required information from a source. Commenting on his early education experiences, David Ellefson mentions that plagiarism often gets detected because it does not match with the overall style and personality of the writer. A careful glance could show that whether a writer is using his own words or stealing someone else’s. According to Joe Harris, if a student is confused about the documentation of a source, he should always resort to the guidance of his teacher. Quoting properly the ideas of others will never do harm to a writer, in fact, it would always save him from trouble. In the views of Sarah Blakeslee a particular style is followed in every discipline and since the purpose of citation is to provide readers with the link to the source so student should not be worried too much about which style to use as long as they are properly using one.
It is rightly mentioned that many students got penalized because of unintentional plagiarism and many careers have been lost due to this one mistake. It depicts the importance of understanding the essence of plagiarism and to learn the proper citation techniques. Many students in their careers ignore this valuable tool which have cost them dearly in advanced academic careers. It is always a good practice to consult the teacher with regards to citation if a student is not sure of it. Higher educational institutes are giving a lot of attention to the proper citations nowadays and they are training students to handle the source material properly.
In my views, it is a good sign that many educational and academic institutes are now taking plagiarism and the methods to avoid it so seriously. This growing understanding will save many students from unintended wrong. On a personal note it is important to name the source when quoting someone else’s ideas, it is ethical and it is professional. Lastly, like other major disciplines English uses its own citation style know as MLA.
