Being an employee-owned firm, financial information is limited. However, there are indicators that the company is growing such as (1) ongoing foundation support and scholarships, (2) Outstanding Employer for 2014 by Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, (3) awards and distinction given to the organization and its employees, and (4) wide-portfolio of completed projects and awarding of new projects. As of 2015, the firm employs more than 325 personnel in different disciplines. Thompson Engineering is based in Mobile, Alabama. What made Thompson Engineering successful can be attributed to its commitment to performance and customer satisfaction. Two noteworthy factors for this are continuing professional training, and excellent employee retention program. Another strength of Thompson Engineering is in the field of environmental and sustainability engineering. Recently, it was awarded an Environmental Stewardship Award from the Partners for Environmental Progess. Moving forward, Thompson Engineering is venturing into quality assurance materials testing in relation to the Airbus assembly line contracts.
JOB AD #2: Civil Engineer at U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Housing Service
The Rural Housing Service (RHS) is an agency under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Its main goal is to “provide affordable rental housing, homeownership opportunities and essential community facilities to rural Americans.” (United States Office of the Federal Register, 2015) The agency does not only cater to housing project but also construction of community facilities that includes health care, public safety, and public service facilities. These include: (a) water and sewer systems, (b) housing, (c) health clinics, (d) emergency service facilities, and (e) electric and telephone service that benefit and improve the quality of life for rural Americans. Their product portfolio is composed of 40 loan and grant programs. Together with the Rural Business and Cooperative Services and Rural Utilities Service, they form the Rural Development Agency arm of the USDA.
The RHS National Office is located in Washington DC. In the past, every rural county in the country has one field office. However, RHS has shifted to electronic communication and centralization recently. RHS now serves its clients through their centralized field offices found in every state. Their clients are American citizens who have an income less than 80% of the area median income. Little financial data is available since it is a government agency, but for year 2014, the agency budget amounted to 1.7 billion USD for direct loans, loan guarantees, grants, and demonstration programs. RHS has a total of 5,000 employees in different fields of expertise.
The position applied for performs different tasks requiring professional experience and technical competence in the civil and environmental engineering field. These activities are related to procedure, principles, techniques, and evaluation in water and waste facilities and essential community facilities.
