Climate resilience essentially refers to the capacity of an ecological system to cope with or manage the impact of climate and climate change in the community. Climate resiliency is characterized by the capacity of communities to quickly and efficiently adapt to the impact of change, and in the process, develop and implement mechanisms to continuously improve sustainability in the community despite the stresses and challenges brought about by this phenomenon. Therefore, climate resiliency mainly constitutes two goal or objectives – the capacity to take or absorb the impact of climate change as well as the ability to rebuild or renew the community through consistent sustainable policies and practices.
The initiative of communities to build climate resiliency is multidimensional in nature. Hence, these initiatives encompass different dimensions of the community – the culture, the economy, social patterns or trends, political strategies including laws or policies for sustainability, and technological capacity in terms of infrastructure development and the use or presence of mechanisms to address climate change.
An example of climate resiliency is the development of a climate change risk reduction plan. In the plan, communities note expectations in the event of natural disasters caused by climate change. In addition, the plan includes prevention strategies and practices in place as well as mitigation strategies in the event of severe damage or destruction. Prevention strategies for climate resiliency include building infrastructure even before natural calamities occur to prevent detrimental outcomes such as flooding. Mitigation strategies include practices that would allow communities to rebuild during the aftermath in such a way that the process allows them to ‘build back better’ so to speak so they can similarly weather other disasters to come in the future. In addition, mitigation strategies include constant monitoring of climate patterns to predict upcoming events, which would then guide preparation for the impact of climate change.
