I am always a fan of The Bold and the Beautiful which airs during the day time. I love the story line and the sub-plotting because it generally talks about family life and business and how each aspect could be a factor for each other, either a positive or a negative factor (Wikia n.p.). Since its inception, there was no acquisition of an Asian or African character or anyone that is of indigenous ethnicity. The characters that are involved in the drama are generally American white and are very much representative of the American culture of being strong willed and risk taker, something that is relatively different from Asians or Afro-Americans who are very measured, calculated, and low key. I could see a lot of reasons why the Bells did not include indigenous characters in the cast: (1) they do not want to create confusion in the themes of the stories. They want to make it purely American. If there are Asians or Africans or any character belonging to an indigenous ethnic group, it would stir confusions as cultural differences may affect how these character would play; (2) the producers do not want to stir conflict and criticism from the public. The drama is basically intense because of its business-like attitude. We are often faced with issues like subordination of Asians or African Americans and how the White people are favoured over the Blacks and immigrants, and if the Bells would include those kinds of characters, it might be a source of conflict or controversy. Maybe the principal creators of the soap opera are mindful at taking extra safeguards to preclude the possibility of being dragged into the limelight of social controversy because the public, the viewers are keen to how every character are represented in the show.
