A hero is someone who does the right thing despite it being hard or frightening. They also do it despite what others may think of them. A coward will run from doing the right thing because it is too hard or they are too scared. They also allow others to influence their thoughts and directions.
Based on the chapter “On The Rainy River” and especially the last line of the chapter, do you think O’Brien is a “hero” or “coward” for going to Vietnam?
I agree with his own assessment of himself. He was a coward. The Vietnam War is very controversial, and the morality of the war will be questioned through the ages, so his decision to go or not based on the questionable morality is not what makes him a hero or a coward. What makes him a coward is that he did not come to a decision about what was right for him and then do it. He made a decision based on fear of what others might think of him, and then followed through with that decision. This is why, even 20 years later, he still is ashamed of the story. Had he made a decision that was true to himself, he would not feel the shame and unease he does.
Should military recruiters be allowed in high schools?
Just like colleges are allowed to scout at high schools, military recruiters should be able to as well. The military is a viable option for a good career following high school. With the media, high school students know the negative aspects of joining the military. Military recruiters should be able to present the positive aspects, so the students can make an educated decision about what to do next in their lives.
