Leadership is the process by which a person guides and directs other with a common view to work towards achieving the goal. Management on the other side entails the art of planning, organization, directing and monitoring resources towards attaining set goals and objectives. Many usually confuse between the two terms leadership and management but ideally the two terms are very different in their functioning and application. Although the two are different, they need to work together to enhance success in the organization (Tracy 46).
First, management focuses on organizing of resources and staffing of the human resources in order to ensure the attainability of the laid down objectives and goals of the organization. Ideally, this is to mean that management focuses on structuring, coordinating and aligning goals with the required resources in order to enhance the success of the organization as per plans. On the other hand, leadership focuses on aligning individual alone to work towards the organizational growth and development. This means that leadership is not concerned with the other resources required foster the success of the organization it is only concerned with the people.
In addition, management focuses more on controlling and problem solving within the organization. This is to mean that management follows the implementation of the organizational plan to identify any problems and provide corrective action early in advance in order to ensure the attainability of the organization’s goals and objectives. On the other hand, leadership is concerned with inspiring and motivating individuals to enhance success in organization. Ideally, this implies that leadership is not concerned on problems arising in the implementation of organizational plan but it is concerned on the welfare of the employees.
Furthermore, management plays a great role towards producing order and consistency in the activities of the organization with an aim of enhancing efficiency. Management aligns the resources and matches them and monitors them closely in order to ensure that they perform as planned. On the other hand, leadership plays a great role towards producing change and movement within an organization. Leadership identifies problems within the employee welfare and thus comes with changes that lead to increased efficiency in the organization which enhance its performance.
Moreover, management has a great focus on planning and budgeting within an organization in order to foreshadow the future of the organization. Management plays a great role in planning the future by developing the guidelines which happen to be the objectives. After identifying the objectives, it comes up with a way of attaining them. It also focuses on incorporating a budget to the plans in order to help the organization in forecast its future growth and development. On the other hand, leadership focuses on establishing a direction through which the employees of an organization need to follow in order to ensure organizational success (Schermerhorn 102).
Finally, management focuses on organizational systems and structures. Organizational systems and structures refer to all the resources of the organization that work hand in hand in ensuring organizational success. As a result, the management administers the functioning of such systems and structures with an aim of ensuring organizational success. On the other hand, leadership focuses only on one resource that is the people. Thus leadership closely monitors the workability of the employees only with an aim of guiding and directing them towards organizational growth and development. In conclusion, it is good for organizations to incorporate the two in order to foster success.
