Impact of Project Management Certification
on Capability to Adapt and Innovate
Introduction
Project management is an integral part of a company’s operations as it ensures the successful completion of a company’s various initiatives. Project management is the act of leading the team in determining what the project is; directing the project through the design and development work; and seeing the project through to completion (Berkun, 2008; Dinsmore & Cabanis-Brewin, 2014). It involves planning, requirements gathering, and scheduling, as well as communication, mid-game strategy, decision-making, crisis management, leadership, and end-game strategy (Berkun, 2008; Ferraro, 2012).
Because of the great importance of project management within organizations, project management associations have developed their own certifications to establish standards and guides for project management (Antropov, 2013). Some of these project management associations include the Project Management Institute, the Association of Project Management, ISO, ICB, and P2M (Antropov, 2013). They provide guidelines and principles on what project managers have to know when managing projects and programs where corporate strategy and enterprise management and innovation are taken into account (Antropov, 2013).
Background of the Study
“Projects involve unique, one-time initiatives” (Shenhar & Dvir, 2013, p. 3), such as investing in the company’s infrastructure, improving existing products, and launching new ventures, organizations, or products. They drive business change and innovation. They are the only way by which an organization can change, gain competitive advantage, innovate, or implement a strategy (Shenhar & Dvir, 2013; Highsmith, 2009). Similarly, Garcia, Rodriguz-Castillanos and Barruitia-Guenga (2013) contend that “successful innovation project management is the only innovation capability dimension that exerts a significant impact n company performance” (p. 27).
Purpose of the Study and Research Question
According to Tome (2010), “knowledge sharing in management processes is a key element in order to facilitate innovation project management” (p. 16). He also asserts that ICT infrastructure, organizational culture, and organizational design exert a significant influence on knowledge sharing (Tome, 2010). On the other hand, Garcia et al. (2013) claim that intellectual capital is a major issue that must be addressed in order to promote innovation capability.
With the many propositions regarding how project management enhances a company’s projects for innovation and its competitive advantage, this research aims to determine how project management can be enhanced to further contribute to enterprise innovation. It aims to answer the question, “How can project management be enhanced to have a greater impact on enterprise innovation?”
