Introduction

Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) continues to be a global problem that has not been resolved. Domestic minor sex trafficking is closely related to domestic violence. According Perdue, Prior, Williamson, & Sherman (2012), most of the victims of sex trafficking are minors with an average age 14 to 15 years, who become recruits in their tender years. The rising number of minor being recruited for sex trafficking displayed a worsening trend in the United States. Domestic sex trafficking remains as a recurring problem since the crime itself does not necessarily involve any movement since these victims may be involved in the sex trafficking inside their family homes and even in their neighborhoods. Due to the inevitable globalization, recruitment of victims of sex trafficking is now possible using the internet, with the minors as the easy targets. Females are generally the most common victims for they are more vulnerable than males. Online recruitment of sex slaves has worsened the situation of domestic sex trafficking since minors spend most of their time in chat rooms and social networking sites. Due to lack of parental guidance, the online platform aggravated the situation since the technology has opened the gateway to attract more minors to become victims to sex trafficking. Poverty is another main cause of sex trafficking since there are many poor children all over the world are vulnerable and deprived of their basic needs. They have no other choice but to accept these material enticements and are forced to engage in sex trade. These minors fall into sex traps and slavery due to lack of parental guidance, abandonment, divorce poverty, drug abuse, or poverty which often lead to human trafficking.

Conclusion

The primary reason why the problem of sex trafficking involving minors has not yet been resolved in many countries around the world is due to the lack of a firm policy that will punish the perpetrators of such crime. The high incidence of human trafficking in the U.S. is a result of the government’s failure to implement the anti-trafficking laws strictly to fight the inhuman act. The Congress has the duty to ensure the implementation of anti-TIP programs through the different executive branches and agencies of the government. The two policies are the National Security Presidential Directive 22 on Combating TIP (NSPD-22) and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) (Siskin & Wyler, 2013), which must be supported by an annual report to explain the status of trafficking in persons. It is the duty of the government to solve the problems on unemployment, low wages, and high cost of living, which enable the human traffickers to take advantage of poverty in order to exploit other people. Human trafficking may be a result of social stability and instability. Social stability takes place when human traffickers use cheap labor through illegal immigrants that will produce substantial profits for the employer. Social instability occurs when there is lack of job opportunities for the general population, which may subject the illegal immigrants to violence and death. In conclusion, the U.S. Congress should enact stricter law to protect the victims of human trafficking and resolve the issues on poverty, unemployment and education. The government should be watchful in fighting human trafficking syndicates against violence inflicted to minors are being recruited as sex slaves. Domestic sex trafficking is a crime that promotes racism and violence against women and children.
