Example Of Dr. Laura’s Message To Women Essay

Dr. Laura who has been a well-known radio talk show host advocating for ‘healthy families’ has made some challenging remarks and set some unreasonable standards for women. I would like to share my thoughts on many of the concepts or ideas that I have learned in the course. The focus remains on the ideals Dr. Laura has placed on the psyche of many American women and families. Those who follow Dr. Laura’s principles of how women should behave in their role as mothers are going to find themselves boxed into a difficult paradigm of life in the 21st century. People who take her messages to heart are likely to be taking numerous steps backward for women’s rights and equality. It is my belief that what she preaches is extremely harmful for woman’s self-image. Especially in a world where women have gone to college and have the desire to pursue careers. Even the women who may want to stay at home for their children are forced to work because of the double income that is required in so many household.
I cannot help but to think of her message as archaic for the evolution of the human race. Her messages seem to be popular with the rightwing conservative Christians in America. It is extremely concerning that so many are fans of this rightwing backward thinking woman. The hypocrisy of her message is also difficult to swallow considering she is woman who is working outside her home pursuing her successful talk show career. It does not sound like she wants to hold herself to the standards she is setting upon women in society.
It seems that Dr. Laura’s voice speaks on behalf of the chauvinists who still aim to keep woman’s suffrage alive in one way or another. It use to that the women were subservient to their husbands to keep their value, but now it has switched off to becoming the perfect mothers. The mothers who are expected to selflessly sacrifice every part of their life for their kids. This message is so harmful for our society. It is takes the entire growth of woman’s positions in society back to the old school mindset of remaining in the home. The new twist uses the well-being of the kids to manipulate women to think that there is no other way to raise happy children.
Working mothers are already facing the guilt of leaving children at home, and now the additional nonsense that Dr. Laura preaches is diminishes the uphill battle that women have been fighting for years. The current era also has many women living as single mothers who do not have a choice but to work outside the home away from the children, making these unrealistic expectations ridiculous and disempowering for so many people in society. Dr. Laura is doing a huge disservice for womankind and families in America by advocating this backward principle that is fulfilling the expectations of the conservative Christians who living in a fantasy world.
