Example Of Environmental Issues- Lake Sammamish Essay

Water quality issues in lakes have become an issue that the society requires to put into perspective. This is mostly sensitive to people living in urban and suburban areas of settlement. One peculiar example that can be cited to illustrate this challenge is the issue of residents living in the King County in Washington. One of the lakes in the area is Lake Sammamish. The lake serves both human and animal habitat in the region. The authorities in the region have made it their responsibility to safeguard the waters of the lake as they acknowledge the great use of the lake to the residents.
In this regard, the sewer systems of the town which were previously deposited in the lake were diverted to other disposal places. This move prompted the reduction of levels of phosphorus in the lake and increased the visibility and cleanliness of the water. This diversion is one way that can be used to deal with the environmental problem of water pollution as people develop their urban and suburban centers. The residents of the urban areas surrounding Lake Sammamish have continued to build and settle in areas close to the lake. The diversion of sewage is not by itself enough to help solve the amount of phosphorous in the water. The county government has employed other tactics in an effort to reduce the phosphorous levels. Some of these tactics include better maintenance of storm water, conservation of forests in the creek basin and trainings on practices that reduce the use and loss of phosphorous from homes . There has been notable success so far.
In the future, training the area residents on how to reduce soil erosion and reducing capital projects are critical ways that will be useful in reducing the level of phosphorus in the lake.
