A dilemma faced by many freshly graduated high-school students is one of choosing a college for their next step ahead - a college degree. The choice sums down to two main criteria; either choosing a college with a big campus which is always packed with students and appears to have a lot going on, or to choose a small college with lesser students yet the atmosphere seems to be quite academic and serious. A thorough comparison of both kinds of campuses then helps a student to decide his desired type of college.
What can compel a student to go to a bigger college campus can, of course, be the size of it and the excitement of being with thousands of other students? Usually, it is the extrovert, bubbling-with-enthusiasm sort of students who find larger campuses as ideal. Big college campuses also provide their students with a wide range of sports activities telecasted; offer a wide range of courses, well-stocked libraries and extensive research facilities and a well-reputed and learned faculty.
On the other hand, the downside of small colleges is the opposite, which is lesser number of students on campus, lesser sports and activities, some of them offer a limited number of majors, libraries and book stock is limited, and research facilities are also not quite up to the mark in comparison with those of larger campuses. A small college campus will be thumbs down for the active, sporty youth who wishes to have a good time in a college that offered a wide range of activities all year round.
However, if one would focus on the real aim of the college which is education, then many students have shown support for smaller colleges. The main reason for that is usually the number of students that are in one class during a lecture. As the maximum number of students never exceeds fifty, the professor always gives more attention to the students, and there are better discussion and explanation of lectures. Also, the professor would often know the name of the student rather than he/she being a number in the crowd. Those who feel overwhelmed in larger classrooms feel quite comfortable as well.
Also, the chances of being taught by an actual professor are greater than being taught by a teacher’s assistant as is the case in bigger colleges. Hence, the imparting of education is ‘real’ and students feel more satisfied with their lectures. Teachers are more committed to teaching.
With a lesser student body, there is lesser burden on the teachers, hence, the professors can assign more work, give more opportunity to their students to write more and work better rather than slack and eventually graduate with average grades. Work is also evaluated better, more carefully and if there are any misconceptions or problems they can be sought with one-on-one contact with the professor.
Many students entering into their first year of college are quite confused at what majors they should take and what fields are more suitable for them. To aid such students, smaller colleges have a better advising system, with the advisers actually knowing the students themselves and remembering them as well. This is helpful in gaining confidence and feeling that one is actually known by others and cared for, which is quite supportive during college life.
Colleges, both big and small are good enough for their purposes; however, it is necessary that a student chooses a college of their choice according to their temperament, attitude and choice. For a well-rounded academic experience, small colleges are a good choice.
