Abraham and Sarah had believed and obeyed God and moved out of their homeland in Ur to a place they never knew. This courage completely trusts an unknown God and blindly begin a journey to an unknown destination indicated the fact that they could take more of promises they had never accessed before. Abraham's laugh at God's initial mention of him fathering a baby shows how shocked he was at the saying (Genesis 17:17). He could not comprehend the possibility of fertility at the age of 100 years. Sarah, on the other hand, laughed in disbelief (and denied it) angering God (Genesis 18:15).
Since had God had not fulfilled any major promise to Abraham or showed any miracle that would convince me of His might, I would, like Abraham and Sarah, disbelieve this promise. However, with nothing to lose and all hope gone, I would entertain the thought of fathering a baby. Instead of laughing, like they both did, I would use the friendly environment and direct communication to inquire of God about the possibility and the plan He intended to use to grant the baby to me.
Sarah advised his husband to take a servant and bear a child through her. According to her, it was the logical way to find a son of Abraham and fulfill God's promise. Knowing she was too old to bear a child, she had no reason to feel jealous at Abraham's decision to take a servant for a wife. She convinced Abraham to take Hagar (and bear Ishmael). She supported the idea genuinely ensuring God's promise to Abraham would come to the realization. It was only after she bore her son, thirteen years later, which she felt jealous. She compelled Abraham to send away Hagar and the baby.
Sarah's proposed solution lasted for only 13 years. After that Ishmael became the source of conflict as, the Sarah strove to protect her young son, Isaac from competition and the risk of sharing his inheritance. Although, to humans, it seemed logical and appropriate, it was not in accordance with God's vision and plan. Strangely, God allowed Abraham to accept Sarah's decision. This decision, although God allowed it, was not a lasting solution and for this reason not appropriate.
