Substance abuse is a major problem for many adolescents, it is therefore important that effective treatments interventions and ought to be put in place to reduce substance abuse and its related problems. Family -based interventions are considered to be one of the best in dealing with adolescent substance abuse as compared to other approaches. Of the many family-based treatment interventions, Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) is considered to be the most effective because of the following reasons: MDFT is normally delivered at home or at community level, therefore treatment is easily accessible. It also takes into account several aspects of adolescent substance abuse such developmental psychology, family systems and also ecosystems theory as such, MDFT can be described as comprehensive .Another distinguishing feature of MDFT which makes it the most effective family- based treatment as compared to other approaches is that treatment mainly focuses on the adolescent’s individual characteristics and other behaviors that contribute to substance use. Furthermore, MDFT is the only approach that has follow-ups on post treatment an important component in demonstrating its long term efficiency. Evidence of changes in substance use after treatment using MDFT which are both statistically and clinically relevant makes MDFT the most effective family-based treatment.
Electronic cigarettes which are popularly known as e-cigarettes are devices operated by batteries to release nicotine without producing smoke but instead deliver nicotine in form of a vapor. Over the years since its invention there has been a growing public health concern from various institutions and individuals over its use. Many regulatory bodies and a greater part of public health community as well as tobacco-control community have strongly opposed the use of e-cigarette as they consider its health effects are not yet fully known (politico.com 2014).Moreover, the World Health Organization considers e-cigarettes as a threat to existing bans or restrictions of public smoking which has been for along time an effective way of controlling tobacco use. This notion is also supported by many anti-tobacco activists who argue that use of e-cigarette should be banned in U.S. colleges and universities so as to make them smoke-free. The opponents of e-cigarette also believes that its use is going to re-normalize smoking hence leading to an increase in cigarette use mainly by the young people including children. Use of e-cigarette in public including parks has been prohibited in New York City.
However, there are those who believe that e-cigarettes are the better alternatives to common tobacco cigarettes. They argue that by allowing use of e-cigarette it will help in contributing in harm reduction strategy, an approach that is commonly used in risky behavior and it mainly aims at reducing the damage instead of eliminating the behavior itself e.g. smoking. Others welcome its use and see it as a way of reducing tobacco use. They argue that e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco and are going to help tobacco addicts to move to this saver alternative hence saving lives.
Regarding the issue to do with vaccines against drug addiction, I don’t think such vaccines are going to effectively reduce the rates of alcohol and drug use, this is because most drugs and alcohol affects both the body and the brain i.e. its effects are physical and psychological while vaccines only treat some part of the problem. Furthermore, vaccines are some times are imperfect; they need to be taken on a regular basis failure to which may result in withdrawal. Many alcohol and drug addicts may find taking vaccines on a regular basis difficult. Another reason is that drug addicts, even if they take vaccines, will find another substance to replace the one they have been vaccinated against hence there will be continued taking of drugs with no reduction.
I will consider such a vaccine for myself or a family member because addiction to alcohol or drugs is a serious threat to life, it kills many people and also makes one incur a lot of costs in seeking health-care. As such, I will only consider this if I have exhausted all other means of treating the addiction problem plus also if the vaccine has been tested and proven to be effective.
