Building Teams and Resolving Conflict
Team development and the behavior of members not as individuals but as a team is an important aspect of success. A number of scholars have proposed several ways through which the proper and effective team development can be done which leads to success. Most of the models even overlap but they all aim at providing a layout or guideline to the leader for the effective coordination and eventual success of the team. Considering a case where several teams are merged in to one, a number of complications are expected to develop within the team and it starts breaking. This is where the Bruce Bruce Tuckman's 1965 Forming Storming Norming Performing team-development model can come in to the play.
The plan focuses on the progress, development of ability and maturity of the team. It begins with the directing style, then moving through the coaching, participating and finally almost getting detached. The model basically consists of four stages.
Forming
Storming
Norming
Performing
According to the plan, the members would initially depend on the leaders for the guidance and direction. They might also have a number of conflicts and issues with each other and some might also decide to leave the group. This is natural. They had different goals and preference when they were in other groups. Getting merged in to one always comes up a number of complexities especially between the team members. There has to be a leader who could gather them under one umbrella and negotiate to solve the conflicts. If this step is ignored and the team proceeds to the further steps, there are chances that the team would break at some stage because of the poor communication and consideration within. It might not seem too important on the surface but it could hinder the growth and creativity if the conflicts are left unresolved .
Along with the professional side of the work, the team also needs to get engaged in interesting social activities. This has a direct effect on their performance and productivity. The leader therefore will engage the members in such activities which are interesting but somehow also relate to the work. This gives the members a bit more space to interact with each other and develop understanding.
When everything would be working in harmony and complimenting each other, the leadership would get shared by the team to an extent. This means that the members now are capable of working without the instructions and only need to revert to leadership for the new tasks and responsibilities. Finally, the team will become strategically aware and is expected to start focusing on the mutual cooperation, interpersonal development, fulfilling their assigned roles and responsibilities and working together for the targets and goals.
