My Characteristics as a Project Manager
I categorize myself as a beginner in the field of project management. However, I believe that I have certain qualities of a good project manager include: the time management, managing work in pressure situations, administrative skills and communication abilities. I always put my efforts to complete all my tasks within agreed and specified deadline. On the other hand, being a project manager I am lacking in project management techniques, methodologies, tools and standards. Moreover, I am lacking in experience of executing and implementing project management tools and techniques to complete a project as per the requirements of a customer.
Characteristics of a Project Manager
One of the main purposes and aims of a project manager is to achieve all the requirements and objectives of a project as per the specifications of the customer within agreed time (deadline) and cost (budget). Success or failure of a project is directly dependent on the project manager. The characteristics, roles and responsibilities of a project manager are as follows (Hales, 2006).
A project manager is responsible to perform as per the policies, standards, and procedures of an organization to achieve its goals and objectives. A project manager is responsible for performing and managing all the activities of a project from initiation till closure of the project. The core responsibility of a project manager is to develop a project plan, communication plan, quality plan, risk plan, procurement plan and human resource management plan. Once the planning phase of the project is completed, the project manager is responsible to execute the project as planned. It is responsibility of a project manager to manage the project scope and procurement of a project.
A project manager has to perform scheduling activities and resources (technical, human, financial) management activities in order to complete the project successfully. A project manager has to utilize project management methodologies, processes along with tools and techniques as defined by an organization. It is responsibility of a project manager to work closely and communicate properly with the project team and stakeholders. A project manager is responsible for provision of weekly and monthly reports on the progress of the project to the higher management of an organization. A project manager provides guidelines for performing necessary actions to resolve the issues rise in a project.
A good project manager should have following characteristics, skills, competencies and abilities (Cosh, Xiaolan and Hughes, 2005).
Ability to directing project from initiation till closure
Ability to take informed and accurate decisions
Ability to work hard under pressure situation to meet short deadlines
Skills of managing project team while resolving conflicts
Skills of managing resources and cost of the project
Ability to effectively manage time and tasks accordingly
Having qualities of a leader
Ability to coordinate project progress among the stakeholders
Abilities to initiate and appraise projects in accordance to the organizational policies
Skills of writing project proposals, reports and concept papers
Skills of decomposing the project into modules, deliverable, activities and tasks to determine project scope, human resources, time and cost of a project
Advanced knowledge and experience of implementing Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT).
Self motivated, analytical abilities, ambitioned and interpersonal abilities (Akrani, 2011)
