Austria and United Arab Emirate (UAE) are nations that have a specific and unique kind of leadership, as well as a peculiar economy that trickles down to control by a family level. Thus, this paper will seek to compare these two nations in social, political and economical way
One of the standing differences between the two nations is the form of leadership. Whereas a president leads UAE, currently Abu Dhabi, Australia is led by a Head of State who is Queen Elizabeth II, and she is represented by the Governor, currently Sir Peter Cosgrove. In as much as Australia could be viewed to adopt “old” way of leadership being led by a Queen. It explains its position in the world today as compared to other nations that are ruled by the president. In terms of population, Australia has a larger number, approximately 22.5 million, whereas UAE has a population of approximately 5.6 million.
Australia is well known for the land it occupies and the host of one of the native cultures, indigenous tribes and Amazon forest as well, approximately 7.741 million square kilometers. It explains the weather, which can be described as semi-arid with slightly higher temperature in the east and south whereas it is tropical in the north. In comparison, UAE is well known for the hot and “desert” temperatures. However, the weather is cooler on the eastern mountains (TERTEROV. 2006, p.4). It explains why Australia relies mostly on agricultural products and tourism as the second best. Whereas UAE depends on personal human investments and the capacity these individuals can bring, especially in the tourism sector evident from the hotels UAE hosts
In terms of economy, apart from agricultural products, Australia is known for its export of machineries, iron ores, coal among other minerals (COUMARELOS. 2012. P. 313). The level of their export is what places the country at approximately 43,000 USA dollars with a human development index of 0.965. UAE, however, can be said to have fewer exports although human private investments can be said to be the main source of wealth (Organisation For Economic Co-Operation And Development, 2008. p. 233). With the economy being 29,900 USA dollars and human development index approximately 0.903. The human development index of UAE is as good as that of Australia, a sign that UAE could explore its resources more and make good use of its products to improve the nation’s economy.
On a social scale, the literacy level of Australia is approximated to be 99% whereas UAE is approximately 77%. It can be attributed to the educations system, beliefs and practices that may hinder education level. Life expectancy of Australia is slightly higher with approximately 82 years whereas UAE is approximately 77 years. In terms of religion, Australia has Christian citizens taking the larger part of the population whereas UAE can be said to be an Islamic nation.
Arguably, the two nations are similar in terms of the people who tend to “control” the economy, given that specific families determine the nature of the projects either directly or indirectly. In UAE, Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair & family are the wealthiest whereas Frank Lowy & family are the richest in Australia. These families owns some of the earning “deals”, materials as well as possess enough wealth to control the economy of their nation, which comes in handy with power. UAE can be described as less developed compared to Australia. However, it has much potential to overcome its barriers and soon it will be ranked amongst the world’s wealthiest nations as well.
