Response to Devontrey Armstrong
Devontrey Armstrong makes some very good points in this discussion. He is particularly very emphatic on marriage and the roles that it can play in turning around the life of an individual who has been previously involved in delinquency or criminal activities. According to Devontrey, the purpose of marriage is to ensure that people settle down for life with the person that they are happy with. Marriage brings about changes to one’s routine activities and introduces a concept of teamwork with the spouse and these can play a great role in suppressing criminal behavior. As Devontrey puts it, there are however some men who still think that they fully control their spouses. Simply put, marriage is quite subjective and depends on what one is looking for. Devontrey also mentions the role of employment in turning one’s life around and claims that getting in trouble when younger can play a life turning role in that one will aim not to get in trouble for the rest of their lives.
Response to Latricia Laurant
Latricia’ discussion is primarily centered on the concept of free will or human agency in other words. As Laticia puts it, people the power and ability to make decisions about the paths they take in life and the people that they become. One may exhibit criminal behavior when young, but turning points may be brought about by events such as marriage, employment and the military. However, what Latricia seems to insinuate is that human agency also plays a part in turning one’s life around that one must make the ultimate personal decision to change for the better. Therefore although tuning points play a great role in initiating desistence of criminal behavior, human agency plays an equally important role. I fully concur with Latricia’s argument.
