Humble farmers in unindustrialized countries are incapable of competing in international markets due to barriers to market access like the tariffs conflicts with the development goals. The tariffs for manufactured goods in the United States and other high-income countries like China are less. On the contrary, tariffs on agricultural products are about seven times higher than those on manufactured goods. They hit the developing countries very hard (Cheng 67). There is also the problem of tariff escalation. It acts as a discouragement to the entrepreneurs of the developing countries from producing and exporting value-added products. In addition, there is massive subsidization of the US farmers which harms farmers in developing countries.
Farmers face technical barriers. The SPS agreement requires goods imported from disease-free areas. They need an inspection before exporting. Farmers face barriers of banned fish. There are many measures that restrict African products from overseas markets. For instance, the European banned fish from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique (Hunger and Markets 90). It was due to their concerns regarding the countries’ sanitary in addition to standards and control systems. There are also costly contaminants. Producers from developing countries are finding it difficult to penetrate the EU markets due to very restrictive rules.WTO permits countries to stop food entering their borders if they don’t meet certain specified standards.
The International organization can help the developing countries through the linking of relationships.It provides support to the participating developing countries. It makes members work together and builds the capacity of the developing country Cheng 97). It can also offer technical assistance in addition to training for the available members. It can also lead them to DEVCO.It provides support to developing countries in addition to matters of standardization through identification of their needs and gives them recommendations.
