Group work: A Personal analysis
It is believed that working in groups means working in collaboration with one team. For this reason, working with a team involves many attributes that mainly affect the behavior of a team leader and team members. I worked in a group for procurement of medicines for animals where I lead a group of 5-6 people for seven days. During my task in the group, I found many observations and findings of the group work dynamics. Overall, it was a great experience to lead a team.
It is reported that there are different types of group work dynamics. One is positive group dynamics, and another is negative group dynamics. Members of positive group used to support each other; they trust each other and support collective and collaborative decisions. In such groups, productivity and creativity are more than the other group types. In contrast to this, in a team or working group with poor dynamics, people do not trust each other, and they may not come to a single point till the end of time. As far as my group work was concerned, I worked in the group with well-defined dynamics where members had supported each other to come to a single point.
It is thought that a group contains many people who are strong in their respective field or knowledge, so no one must be discouraged directly or indirectly. Additionally, everyone in the group must have a positive attitude about work, and habit of fault-finding or negative attitude must be discouraged.
Information sharing and processing in a group
Open information sharing and processing is very much important in the group work. It must be ensured that every member of the group share and communicate clearly with each other. For proper information sharing and processing, proper documentation, email, presentations can be used which will aid to reduce ambiguity in the meeting. In conclusion, proper tools of information gathering and processing must be used as it gives a professional attitude.
Group generated ideas.
Group generated ideas must be encouraged in positive ways, and discouraging attitude must be discouraged enthusiastically. All ideas and suggestions must be tackled professionally with a good feedback and appropriate attention.
Positive and negative group behavior.
Positive and negative group behavior can influence the group performance dominantly. This is observed that negative behavior tends to reduce the outcome and productivity of the group eventually, while negative attitude in a group is observed due to weak leadership, aggression, pinpointing others for no reason, making jokes at improper time, stress and communication barriers, etc. These all factors lead to poor outcome of the group and team members do not come to a decisive point at the end of the day. (Jelphs & Dickinson, 2008)
In contrast to this, when people in the group trust each other, they tend to communicate properly, they support arguments and listen conflicting points patiently. In addition to this, they generate humor at a proper time and behave in an organized and systematic way. Finally, this behavior generates a positive attitude in the group, and people deliver a good output in very short time.
All in all, my work experience in the group suggests that strong group dynamics delivers the true results and this can be enhanced and developed by knowing team members more, breaking down barriers and communicating properly with each other.
