One of major causes of HIV increased transition is needle sharing amongst drug users. In the past, there have been various programs that promoted the safe needle use. One of such programs is needle syringe program (NSP) that has proved to be effective in many countries including Germany. The population that NSP is targeting includes male population in prison. In some cases, vending machines that sell of exchange syringes are distributed in prisons. Due to that, results show significant decrease in HIV transition. According to document published by World Health Organization, "Effectiveness of Sterile Needle and Syringe Programming in Reducing HIV/AIDS Among Injecting Drug Users", "The introduction of vending machines in an open prison for males in Hamburg, Germany resulted in significant decrease in needle-sharing and no new individuals with HIV infection were identified during the programme" (19). NSP is an example of a successful program that can reduce HIV transmission among a critical population such as prisoners.
It is known that the transmission of HIV is widespread in the African continent. The reasons for this are mainly found in the lack of interests among local population to speak openly about HIV and the causes that lead to the appearance of it. However, according to the UNAIDS, Zimbabwe proved that it is possible to reduce HIV transition amongst African population as well. As cited by the UNAIDS, "HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe has declined remarkably in recent years, dropping from 26% to 14% between 1997 and 2009." The country, including the Ministry of Health, took action in speaking openly about the ways in which HIV is transmitted. Other programs that were included aimed at reduction of sexual partners, breaking the taboo regarding HIV, and speaking openly about HIV. Zimbabwe is a proof that with the mutual action everything is possible.
