Human being is born as a social creature. During our entire life we establish connections with different people that happen to appear in our life. We need communication to express ourselves, to show our emotions and to gain confidence that we are on the right way. However, with technical development and crazy life rhythm, the situation seems to change.
Ellen Goodman in “Friendless in America” raises a few important issues. Firstly, people now find it easier to call the radio or TV talk show and tell the whole world about their personal problems waiting for understanding and advice than go to closest friend and talk to him or her. The reason for this is simple: people are losing friends and losing capability to trust. The author proves it by the survey that found almost one-forth of Americans that had nobody to talk to about 'important matters'.
Secondly, the author brings up the question why 'social isolation' or 'friendlessness' in America still is not a matter of a great concern. She mentions that if we talked about divorces that doubled or income decline, everybody would think of it as of a problem but the absence of communication seems not to bother anybody.
Thirdly, Goodman explains why our circle of friends is eroding. This is happening mainly because of time crunch. People are so busy with career building and their families (this is also important things) that the friendship is knocked off from their lives because of the time scarcity. Moreover, virtual communication has almost substituted real face to face meetings. People find it easier to keep relationships over time and distance than build real ones in the backyards.
