The bible is full of various literary devices most of which have been studied by scholars. One of the most common styles used in Genesis, the first book of the bible, is repetition. Repetition is the repeating of words by the author to create emphasis. Literary experts say that the intensive use of repetition in the book of Genesis makes up for the fact that the bible lacks the formal criteria common in most other literary works. Genesis is basically a narrative that gives account of various events that took place immediately after the creation of the world.
Instances of repetition in the genesis are numerous.
In Genesis 1:9-19, the word ‘and God said’ is repeated several times throughout the narrative. This enhances the flow of events and makes it easy for the reader to follow the sequence of events in the bible. At genesis 1: 10, it is written that “And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering of the waters he called seas: and God saw that it was good”. The repetition of the word ‘and God’ is evident in the text. Another instance of repetition in the book of Genesis is found in the same chapter. At genesis 1: 12, it is write “And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so”. Then in Genesis 1:18, the bible says, “And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good”.
If carefully studied, one would notice that the type of repetition that is prevalent in the book of genesis, chapter one does not contain any of the forms of repetition commonly found in other forms of literary wok that form part of the traditional literature. Ng the book of genesis, one notices the impression that it was meant to be a narrative, where the author constantly stated their intended action and did it. This is manifest in the manner in which the packaging of god’s deeds is done in the bible. The wording of the book also reassures the readers, through use of repetition, that God did all these things, and that each of what God did by the end of each day in the creation account was good and satisfactory to him. This shows the infallibility of God and his creation.
Repetition is a common feature in most books of the bible. It is found in the books of Hebrew, Psalms, Exodus and many other books. It is because of the constant use of repetition that the style came to be known as the “Hebrew rhetoric” in reference to the fact that the bible is believed to have been written in Hebrew, the native language of the early communities mentioned in the bible. Repetition is also used to serve a more a more noble purpose in the bible. The repeated phrases draws the reader’s attention to the text of the Genesis and other books in which repetition is commonly used. This underscores the importance of the message contained in the chapters and draws the reader to them. Lastly, the use of repetition in the book of genesis is very important for both continuity and harmony of the text. It enables the book to flow seamlessly from one event to another according to the chronology in which they occurred.
