As a police officer, the Code of Ethics for Law Enforcement tells me what I should and should not do while performing my duty as well as how I should behave even during off work. This code of ethics explains that my responsibility is not only within the boundaries of our office quarter, but also to every individual and members of the community that I work with. Fundamentally, being a member of law enforcement, this ethics demand that I should protect the lives of every citizen including his or her property. I must go beyond my way to safeguard every one against possible crimes, harassment, complaint and violence. This moral belief among the law enforcers dictates that I should respect every citizen in this country, no matter what they went through or their status in the community. Every citizen has the right for equality, justice and autonomy, and this ethics command us law enforcers to value this. While off duty, this code of ethics reminds every police officer to remain honest among them and become a role model, not only for their family but to their co-officers and community as well. As a member of the law enforcement, I should remain trustworthy, maintain discipline and self-control at all time and demonstrate bravery especially when faced with danger. All the time, I should remain firm with my decisions and should not allow my private feelings and friendship to drive my values. When I make judgment and choices, it should reflect our code of ethics as a trusted member of the law and based on my sworn duties and responsibilities. Above all, this ethics remind the police officers to maintain their faith to the police service and commit himself to the Lord as he or she serves and protect everyone.
While reading the code of ethics, its messages appear unclear to its reader probably because of chosen words. Most of the time, it is easier to communicate a message, especially an important set of responsibilities, if words are simple and direct. Although it appears more professional statements include fancy words, but sometimes, the same fancy words cause confusion and complexities to the message itself. Personally, it took me a while to explain to myself the word ‘unsullied.’ Apparently, merriam-webster explains that it means undamaged and of good quality. If I will have the change to restate the sentence, it will appear more direct to say that police officers, both while working and during off duty, must maintain clean and respectable life. I also have the same observation when I read through the word ‘officiously.’ The statement is more understandable and direct if the statement says that police officers must not use his position to drive a decision. Perhaps, another instance that makes this code of ethics vague is style of writing. The code of ethics appear as a short message, however, compiling short sentences and separating them using semi-colon add to the misunderstanding. Every police officer must understand and live every word of this ethics within their heart. It is easier to see, read and comprehend its presentation is through bullet-points. The messages included in the code of ethics are very important and its reader must easily understand it, thus, it is equally critical that police officers can identify at an instant look the key messages and facts quickly. Critical statements such as this must remain simple, direct and easy to read. Every reader, especially the member of the law enforcement, will retain every statement in a short span of time.
