Rapes and assaults are one of the most serious crimes that exist in the world today. They are especially common in countries in a state of war or equivalent. In most of the developing countries or under-developed countries, such crimes go unreported. The families of the victims view it as a loss of self-respect to report the rape of a daughter or a sister. Hence, the problem is on a larger scale than the one reported in statistics. However, one form of rape that had gone unnoticed to date was that of marital rape. Now that it has been recognized in the law, it will offer protection to all those women who were unable to prove the atrocities being committed in the name of marriage.
Marital rape should be recognized on the same level as other types of rape. Morally speaking, it is an even greater offence. A couple exchange vows to protect each other. If such vows were to have any legal footing, the person would violate the law if he/she tries to harm his/her spouse in an unacceptable manner. It is similar to the offence of stealing. If a son steals money from his father, with the wrong intention of keeping it secret, knowing that if his father knew he had taken the money, he would be punished, then the son has done a crime that is equivalent to stealing in all respects. Several cases are reported in which the descendants defraud their elders into transferring the title of the property to them. Is that not considered fraud? Therefore, marital rape is as serious a crime as other rapes.
