The academic integrity violation that I was caught up in involved cheating in an exam. I had spent hours on end over the past few weeks preparing for the examination. Throughout that revision period I felt I had not adequately prepared. I have since come to realize that I should have been reading throughout the school term and not just during the exam period. My lack of preparedness led to my panic and nervousness which in turn led to my involvement in the examination irregularity. What happened is that while the rest of us in the classroom struggled to complete the exam one of our colleagues did so before us and stood to leave. As he left he yelled out the answers to some questions. I decided to use the answers he wrote but wrote them down against questions that I had wrongly worked out so that the questions and answers didn’t correspond.
After a long week of feeling really guilty of what I had done, the instructor called me to his office and probed me on what had happened. . I could see that he was disappointed in me. He did not mince his words. He told me that he expected me to know better than try to cheat in an examination. I told him the truth and that I was truly remorseful about the unfortunate incidence. He pardoned me and counseled me about preparation for examinations and the consequences of cheating. The crux of this situation is that I failed to prepare for the examination well in advance and when I was meant to. As a result, I ended up panicking, trying to read and grasp everything at the last minute. The strain from reading too much in a very short time and the effect of the sleepless nights caught up with me on the day of the examination. My brain was exhausted and I could not recall anything.
What I wish I would have differently was to start studying from the beginning of the school term. This would have given me enough time to plan my coursework in manageable bits and study more effectively. Also, had I gotten to the exam room and failed to remember anything then I should have deferred the course or done my best with the little knowledge I ha. This would have been the better, conscientious and more honorable thing to do. I shouldn’t have relied on answers obtained dishonestly.
Having learnt a lesson in honesty, I am sure that I have more discipline now and will desist from a wrong engagement no matter how tempting or enticing it may be. Honesty and discipline also mean I can work in unsupervised conditions giving my superiors and supervisors time to carry out other activities that will be of benefit to the institution.
The virtue of honesty which I learnt from this incident can help me to solve ethical dilemmas at all levels. Take the case of my friend George, for instance. He is set to marry the woman of his dreams later this year. But unknown to him, the same woman is seeing Mark as well who also happens to be my friends. Neither of my two friends know that the lady is seeing the other. I will have to move fast. This could involve approaching one of them, or even the lady. I will have to convince to make the right decision so that they are saved from potential heartbreaks that may result if things did not change.
Honesty, as a value, has become very important to me. That is why I must always act in a manner that best upholds it. This will, no doubt, make my professional career a success.
