The GMU Honor Code states that presenting somebody’s ideas, thoughts and opinions as one’s original without the proper acknowledgment work comprises plagiarism. Academic sites also states that any work obtained from them without proper citation comprises plagiarism. The sites which provide students with these academic materials also say that any work that the students obtain from them should be properly cited and acknowledged. The GMU Honor Code discourages cheating of any cases by its students. Cheating may involve purchasing or attempting to purchase academic materials from any source. It includes individuals, libraries or academic sites. Academic materials that can be purchased include term papers, essays, research papers, assignments as well as answers. The Honor Code strongly discourages this practice. Penalties that may be meted on a student as a result of plagiarism and cheating include suspension or expulsion. The Honor Code is largely similar in many aspects as compared to other sites. It states that any information obtained from another source apart from the student’s own should be properly acknowledged and given credit. These academic sites are supposed to provide students with materials that will help them in their academic work for purposes of reference or guidance rather than providing them with direct answers to their essays, assignments, term papers and research papers. Academic sites say that when one copies another author’s work, paraphrases it or copies the opinions and ideas of the author, proper citations should be given irrespective of the extent of use of the information. However, some students don’t know what should be cited because some think that only the exact works of an author should be cited.
The Honor Code states that paraphrases, ideas and even summaries of information and opinions from another author should be cited and acknowledged. The academic site 123helpme.com also encourages that all opinions, ideas and thoughts from a different author should be properly cited and acknowledged. The site, just like the GMU Honor Code maintains a strict policy of properly citing and acknowledging copied work and opinions. 123helpme.com sells original case studies, term papers, speeches and research papers from other authors, but they maintain that any work that they provide is permissible and legal and can be copied from their website. However, the website does not tolerate or condone any form of plagiarism or cheating either partially or wholly. Acknowledging someone else’s work is a policy that most websites maintain which is same as the strict GMU Honor Code. Since this website doesn’t maintain any copyright because they are held by the original authors and writers, they require all works they provide to be cited in order to maintain the intellectual integrity of the original owners.
Collegetermpapers.com is also another site that upholds the policy of giving original authors credit when citing their works. It has similar terms of service to 123helpme.com. The GMU Honor Code also states that presenting one’s work as your original work comprises a serious ethical offense. The site also discourages the presenting of copied opinions, ideas and thoughts of the original owner as someone’s work because it is unethical and also unfair to the original copyright owners. Sources that are obtained from the internet should also be acknowledged, and cited as is policy of the honor code as well as collegetermpapers.com. It is also fair to give credit to the internet sources where information has been obtained because copyright rules apply to those who use the internet too. The GMU Honor Code also strongly advises against using someone else’s original internet material on one’s web page without their consent or permission. It constitutes to intellectual theft or unethical use of intellectual material. Academics websites also insist on obtaining permission when using Internet resources and putting someone else’s material on your web page.
However, some of the academic sites that provide work done by different authors don’t give out guidelines and standards on how the works should be cited. The GMU Honor Code gives a clear guideline on how to cite secondary sources. It states that works from other sources should be properly cited in the correct manner depending on the writing style that one is using. Some websites provide wrong and improper citation formats and sources. Plagiarism is an ethical offense, using wrong or improper citations can lead to stiff penalties. Any work that a student does that is not his/her original work requires proper citation and paraphrasing. The websites that students normally subscribe to don’t provide any clear framework on how to cite and paraphrase works obtained by them. Sometimes they don’t even provide the original owners of the works that they sell which makes it hard for the user to state proper sources and citations. Copyright doesn’t have to be written or stated in the materials because it is automatic. Some users of other authors’ materials also abuse the fair use of copyrighted material provided by academic websites without giving them credit with also constitutes intellectual theft.
As The GMU Honor Code states all sources used from another party should be acknowledged in academic writing because of ethical grounds and appreciating and recognizing the works of others. Websites should also clearly state the sources of the information and scholarly works that they possess in their sites for easy citations. Information that is available in the public domain should also be correctly cited because there is some information which is deemed to be in the public domain but in the real sense it is not. Users of this information should not also misuse the works of other people because excessive use of another person’s works is not acceptable and it is considered very unethical. The terms of service of academic websites should also be clear and easy to understand by the users of their materials. By so doing the students get clear guidance on how to go about their academic work as far as citations and referencing is concerned. Although it is not clearly defined as to what specific number of notes, words or lines that should be used from a different author, it is advised to get permission from the original authors before using a large number of their work. Universities and other academic institutions should set stringent regulations about plagiarism to deter the use of other authors’ materials and encourage the student to be creative in writing their academic works. The Honor Code however is not meant to make students fail or retake classes, it is meant to foster a sense of integrity and honesty in academics. It is also therefore just and fair for the institution to look into the Honor Code regularly in order to make revisions and adjustments concerning the rules and regulations that they have outlined in the Honor Code.
