According to Woollaston, Facebook forced its users to use its messenger after splitting with the main application. The use of the messenger has raised privacy issues because it has access to people’s accounts, contacts, and text messages (Woollaston 1). Additionally, the application can edit user’s messages and allows Facebook to make direct calls. Thus, users have complained that Facebook was violating their privacy. Customer reviews on Google Play suggested that users were uncomfortable with the idea of Facebook forcing them to use the application. Facebook responded that it required access to user accounts so that the application could be installed and run effectively. The main stakeholders in the issue of privacy include Facebook and its users. Facebook claims that it is accessing user’s accounts to ensure excellent services whereas users are complaining of Facebook forcing them to accept the use of the application (Woollaston 1).
Even though Facebook requires access to user information to ensure that the messenger runs effectively, users have the right to issue Facebook the permission to access their information. According to the rights approach advocated by Immanuel Kant and other philosophers, individuals have the right to choose for themselves. Facebook users can make choices and have the moral right that Facebook should respect their rights. They can do anything as long as it does not violate the fundamental rights of other users. Thus, Facebook should have asked for the permission of its users to accept using the messenger and after that monitor the actions of the users.
If I had been in a situation similar to that of Facebook, I would have clarified the issue with users and assure them that the company would not share their information with third parties. Additionally, I would have issued a video on how users could participate in protecting their private information so that they could be in control of their private information.
