Ethical Self-Awareness
Ethical Self-Awareness
God is a symbol of many religious beliefs in different religions. Thus, the God himself is being worshiped in various religions using different names. The concept of “God” has no consensus especially in terms of its nature. For instance, God in Abrahamic concept encompasses monotheistic characterization in Judaism. There is also a Trinitarian view of God among Christians. On the other hand, Islam has also another concept of God. However, the question is, can we be good without God? To answer this question, let us present an Islamic view of how a person can be good without God.
Basically, God is described in Holy Quran as the one and only, the absolute, eternal, and he is Allah. There is no one like Allah as he is the only one. It is important that we must follow what God or Allah wanted us to do. In this way, we can be not just His good follower, but also a good citizen whichever nation we live in. In my home country, my Muslim brothers and sisters are aware how to be a good follower of Allah, which turn us to be good citizens of our country. We may consider a person being good in the absence of “God” for as long as he or she knows how to live his or her life without giving harm to other people. Selflessness is not just seen as a good trait in Islam, but also in other religions as well. It is how we think and act for the benefits of others, which therefore discount a specific religion. In fact, Cunningham and Kelsay (2013) say that religion signifies people’s way of feeling and thinking.
Therefore, a person can be good without God for as long as no physical or emotional harm is inflicted onto others. However, a person can be a better citizen or follower if his actions and way of thinking and feeling are based on the written scripture such as the Bible or, in my case, the Holy Quran.
