What did you learn? What is your reaction to the movie?

Through the movie I have learned that the dolphins are in great danger of extinction. I had no idea people feed on dolphins. All I knew that the dolphins are used for recreation purpose but not hunting them down to feed them. If this culture spread throughout the globe, the dolphins would become extinct. I am truly shocked by what is happening in Taiji Japan. This is cruelty and violence against the dolphin and marine animals in general.
How does ‘The Cove’ apply to international politics/relations? (I’m looking for more than just “it happens in Japan” or “dolphins swim in the ocean”) -the more connections you make the more points. Do some thinking about what you saw in the movie.
What is happening today in Japan can happen in United State “tomorrow”, hence this is a global crisis which cannot be ignored. When the hunters in Japan have exhaust all the dolphins at their jurisdictions and the market for dolphins still exist, the hunters will move to others areas beyond Japan territorial waters where they can start poaching the dolphin. This will have a great effect on the ecosystem since it would be hard to replace the impact of the dolphins in the ecosystem or their food chain. Thus, to avoid this crisis, there is need of international intervention. Countries need to apply pressure on the Japan government to put in place measures which stop the practice of hunting dolphins. The international politics must play a role in banning exportation of dolphins and pass policies which will inhibit consumptions of dolphins.
What did the person in the movie mean when they said that individuals can achieve more change than international institutions? What were they referring to? Do you agree? Why or Why not? Explain.
Change begins at a personal level, then to neighbors then to the whole community. If we want to see a certain change in our community we must start from our locality by educating those around us the importance and the need to change and be the pioneer of the change we want and other will follow suit. This personal initiative has more influence since it deal with the source of the problem face to face. The international institutions may pass policies and the people on the ground may not the idea of the policies which have been put in place or why they need to change. The international institution lack personal touch with the locals hence they may pass laws which have not put into consideration the culture or the needs of the locals. Thus, it would be impossible for the locals to obey the rules put in place.
The movie was referring to Ric O'Barry. I agree with the statement, it is Ric initiative and effort in the fight for the right of the dolphin that we have come to know what is happening in Taiji japan. He has dedicated his time and efforts to educate the public, through the movie. the danger the dolphin are facing. The world organization dealing with marine affairs have not been able to achieve what Ric has achieved through this film
Is this just a cultural issue? Are there similar things that we do in America that Japanese might point to and say that we are wrong? What do you think?
This is not a culture issue at all. People have been adoring dolphin for a quite a long time and have used them for recreation purposes. This adoration for dolphin has penetrated to movies and TV shows. It is not strange here in America visit a park or a marine park just to see the dolphins. The dolphins in the park were captured and transported to the parks. Hence, we cannot entirely blame the Japanese for hunting the dolphins because even the Americans mistreat the dolphins by removing them from their natural habitat. Thus, it’s a international crisis on the human cruelty on the dolphins which must be discouraged.
Do you think that this type of environmental issue (destruction of marine life) is something that we have to worry about? Or do you think that humans and technology will find a way to solve it (read “Networking Nature” and the other readings).
The destruction of marine is a big disaster to the ecosystem since it interferes with the balance of the nature. If the practice continues, in near future some of the marine animal would become extinct. Additionally, the general marine environment will degrade due to the destructions practices. The hunter may get greedy and use chemicals to capture more dolphins. Moreover, the fishing vessels may spill oil and other waste into the seas hence polluting the seas.

The movie, The Cove, in 2010 it won the Academy Awards as the best documentary film. The movie also won the U.S.A Audience Awards in 2009. However, in Japan the movie has been criticized as some think the movie was staged management and doctored to have a have great appeal to the audience (Emily, 2014).
