Example Of Essay On This Study Was Guided By The Following Study Question;
Homework 1
Question one
Does rosuvastatin lower the cases of major cardiovascular events through lowering the levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein? If this is the case, could it be used in the treatment of the cardiovascular ailments?
Question two
In order to answer the above study question, a quantitative research design was used where a survey was conducted among women and men with elevated C-reactive protein. The sample comprised of 17,802 healthy women and men who were selected randomly. These men and women had low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of 3.4 mmol per litre, high levels of sensitivity for C-reactive proteins, among other requirements. A trial design was used and several follow-up visits in order to collect the primary data. The researchers then used statistical methods to analyze the data in order to come up with a valid conclusion.
Question three
In order to minimize confounding, the researchers in this study used randomization strategy. Since they used a large size sample, randomization ensured that the participants were given equal opportunity to belong to any treatment group. As a result all groups were similar in terms of gender, age, behaviors and all other confounding factors.
Question four
Risk Difference (RD) = (CIe) - (CIu)
Where Cle is the cumulative incidence of the exposed group and CLu is the cumulative difference of the unexposed group.
(RD) = (CIe) - (CIu) = 0.37 – 0.17 = 0.20
Question five
Relative risk for primary end point of 0.56 means that the clinical try was able to reduce the risk of the cardiovascular ailment by 0.44 or 44% in comparison to placebo. It support the conclusion of the study that rosuvastatin reduced the incidences of major cardiovascular events significantly.
Question six
The safety monitoring board stopped the trial due to low median follow-up. Some participants withdrew from the trial making it difficult for the researchers to collect all the necessary information. In addition, the researchers were not able to follow-up the participants even for two years as it had been arranged in the beginning of the study. The researcher were required to follow-up the participants for the next four years in order to know whether the tested treatment was effective in addressing their ailment.
Question seven
Question eight
Assuming there was no lost follow-up,
Risk of death in percentage = no. of cases of death/ total sample size x 100
Rosuvastatin = 198/8901 * 100 = 1%
Placebo = 247/8901 * 100 = 1.25%
Question nine
The number needed to treat for myocardial infarction = no. of cases/ total sample size x 100
Rosuvastatin = 83/8901 * 100 = 0.45%
Placebo = 157/8901 * 100 = 0.85%
Question ten
The statement is true since Rosuvastatin lowered both C-reactive protein and LDL as observed in the study. It is from this observation that the researchers in this study concluded that C-reactive protein has the ability to lower the cases of the cardiovascular events.
