INT. DANCING CLASS – EVENING
In a dance room, six women and two men move from right to left, front and back, following the instructors’ indications, a middle aged woman, but highly spirited. GENE and NILES dancing next to each other on Irene Cara’s “What a Feeling”.
NILES
(imitating the instructor)
One, three, free, four, one, three, free, four. That’s the rhythm. Tired much, Robbins?
He talks to Gene, calling her on her surname, watching her slyly, while elegantly executing the steps.
GENE
Watch out, Hoffman, those pants of yours are gonna fall from all the excitement.
NILES
GENE
Got anything I’d be interested in, Hoffman?
She turns her head towards him, while biting her down lip and lifting her left eyebrow.
NILES
Cut the craps, Robbins. You’re making me nervous. I’m losing my steps.
The instructor shouts, covering Niles.
One, two, three, four, Mr. Hoffman. Bent, spread, twist, fall. That’s all for today, you happy feet. Now go and do something good with that sexual energy gathered. I know what I’m gonna do.
NILES
(to Gene)
Have a popcorn with that erotic movie.
Gene and Niles both giggling.
You think I’m funny, Mr. Hoffman. Good. This pleases me.
NILES
Come on, Rory, you know I’m crazy about you. It’s just this sexual energy between us. Can you feel it?
He stares seductively at the Instructor, touching her hand.
Go now, Mr. Hoffman, or I’ll make a real man out of you.
NILES
(Touching the instructor’s hand with both his hands)
You’re a champ, Rory. Take good care of that cheerleader body. One day you’ll have to make me a real man.
He smiles, winks at the Instructor and leaves the room.
Good night, Mr. Hoffman. May your youth be blessed!
EXT. DANCE ROOM FRONT ENTRANCE, CONTINUOUS
NILES
Hey, Robbins, wait up, girl.
GENE
Say, Hoffman, what are doing this weekend?
NILES
Oh, you crazy thing, I gave you some wild ideas in there, huh?
GENE
That too. But I feel like climbing. I’m desperate to take some fresh air and climb the mountain a little. Luna and Crystal are coming for sure, and Patrick said he might come also, will let me know tomorrow. You’d like to come?
NILES
I’m not much of a mountain guy
GENE
Come on, you woos! It will be fun. Think about that sexual energy, but high into the mountains. Oh, wait, you don’t have plans or anything for the weekend?
NILES
Damn it, Robbins, I’m a good looking man in my twenties with lots of friends and hundreds of women hunting me. So no, I don’t have any plans. When do you leave and from where?
GENE
Awesome! I’ll have to talk to the girls and Pat and let you know everything by tomorrow evening. I did’t forget about that beer you promised me, Hoffman. You can pack it, I’ll have it by the fire, while we camp.
NILES
You’re crazy, Robbins. How the heal you’re still single when all your friends your age are married with 2-3 children already, it’s a mystery to me.
GENE
Don’t bother that pretty hair of yours with all this thinking, Hoffman. Look, it’s Pat. Come and say hi.
Patrick, parking, lets down the right window of his car.
GENE
Hi, Pat. You’re right on time.
PATRICK
I am? Hey, guys, what are you up to?
NILES
Hey, man! Nothin’, just dancing and sharing some sexual energy.
GENE
Yeah, with Mrs. Rory, the hot Instructor.
PATRICK
Come on up, Gene. Niles, can I leave you anywhere?
NILES
(Starring at Gene as he speaks)
No, man. I’m good,. I want to take a fresh breath of air. Take care now.
He waves, then puts his hands inside the pockets of his blouse and walks away.
INT. DANCING CLASS – EVENING
One, two, three, four, move those legs, Miss Robbins! Spread your wings and fly, Mr. Hoffman! Is that glance a new dance move, Miss Velvet? Come on, I want to see some happy feet, all I see is grumpiness. One, two, three, four
NILES
Hey, Robbins! Why the long face? You need my hug?
GENE
Mind your crossed legs, Niles!
Bent, spread, twist, fall. That’s all for today, happy feet. See you on Monday!
EXT. DANCE ROOM FRONT ENTRANCE, CONTINUOUS
Outside the dance room, Niles standing. Waiting.
NILESHey, what’s up, Robbins? You seem troubled. Where’s Patrick? Isn’t he taking you home?
GENE
I’m a big girl, I can manage to go home by myself.
NILES
Come on, Robbins, it seems like I’ll have to put a beer in you right now.
GENE
I’d have a beer, or five.
INT. PUB – NIGHT
NILES
Spit it out, Robbins. Why the green face?
GENE
Patrick stood me up with the mountain thing. I was looking forward to this trip. I guess we’ll have to go by train now.
NILES
Aha! So you are sweethearts!
GENE
That’s not the point.
NILES
For how long?
GENE
A year or so. But I’m tired of it. Anyway, why so curious, Niles?
NILES
Oh, you secretive little thing. I told you, Robbins. I’m young, single, handsome and curious.
GENE
(Laughing, while sipping beer directly from the bottle)
You’re exactly what I need now. A crazy friend making sex jokes on me.
NILES
(starring at her for a while, then looking down and sipping from his beer)
Yeah, Robbins. I’m your man for that.
EXT. TRAIN STATION – MORNING
Gene, Luna and Crystal on the train platform, with their backpacks on.
CRYSTAL
It’s almost 7:20. In 10 minutes the train will be here and no trace of Niles.
LUNA
He’ll be here, I guess. Otherwise it’s just us, girls, alone on the mountain. Girl Power!
GENE
I hope he’ll come.
CRYSTAL
(pushing Luna with her shoulder)
The train is here, let’s go, girl power!
LUNA
It’ll be fun, you’ll see.
GENE
(shouting, arms on the train’s open window)
Hey, Sleeping Beauty! One second, I’ll lay down the red carpet for you.
NILES
(hopping in the train)
Hey, pretty ladies, I’m here, your worries are over. I’ll take care of you.
EXT. MOUNTAIN – DAY
CRYSTAL
Niles dear, have you been working out? Look at those biceps!
LUNA
Crystal, remember, you said no men for at least a week
CRYSTAL
We’re on mountain, this doesn’t count.
NILES
Girls, it’s plenty of me for all of you!
GENE
Guys, would you look at the view? We’ve been climbing for two hours and we still have some more to go. Let’s break! It’s amazing here!
LUNA
Wow, I feel so big! Everything seems so small from up here! My first mountain trip, I love it!
GENE
It seems like it’s about to rain. Let’s move.
NILES
Yes, boss! Come on, girls, you heard the man.
CRYSTAL
I didn’t get to eat my sandwich. Few more minutes, please.
GENE
All right, but we’ll have to hurry, the clouds are moving fast.
NILES
(Watching Gene)Oh, you, spirit of the nature! Spare us!
GENE
It’s not funny, Niles. Why are you picking me?
CRYSTAL
You have to ask? I bet even the clouds can sense the sexual tension between you too and are about tounload.
LUNA
Oh, rain drops. We’d better go.
INTERCUT WITH:
INT, MOUNTAIN CCOTTAGE – EVENING
Two hours later, all wet, reaching the targeted mountain cottage.
NILES
You go up and change those wet clothes, I’ll go after.
CRYSTAL
As long as we’re sharing the room, we can all change together, Niles sweetheart!
LUNA
Let’s go, Crystal. You’re all wet.
CRYSTAL
(Laughing)
Aren’t we all?
GENE comes down.
GENE
The girls are almost done. You can go up.
NILES
Gene, why did you invite me on this trip?
GENE
I like your company, dude, what’s wrong with that?
NILES
I’m your friend, you like my company, what am I, your dog?
GENE
Wow, what’s this all about?
NILES
You like it when I flirt with you. I can sense it. I can sense many things about you.
GENE
What are you saying, Hoffman?
NILES
Robbins, I like when I’m around you. Everywhere we go I’m next to you. I like this attraction.
GENE
I feel comfortable around you. I mean I don’t know exactly what I feel about you, but I feel good when you’re next to me.
NILES
Than why are you so indifferent all the time with me?
GENE
You kiddin’ me? You talk like you’re about to jump on any woman who’d answer your lickerish flirt. I’m not like that. Besides, the age
NILES
Don’t give me the age crap. I’m old enough to know what I want and you don’t look a day over 23.
GENE
Although I’m 30.
NILES
You know, earlier, when the storm started, I could only think of one thing.
GENE
What? A Fourthsome?
NILES
Not quite. Something much more special.
He touches her hand, pulling her closer to him. Steps and laughter from upstairs. Luna and Crystal descend.
LUNA
We’re all dry, you can go and change now, Niles.
CRYSTAL
Actually, I don’t like this sweater. Come, Luna, help me pick another!
Crystal and Luna go up. Gene and Niles, looking at each other, holding hands.
NILES
Robbins, there’s the fire. How ‘bout that beer now?
GENE
Hoffman, you’re wet. Go and change those clothes and we’ll see about the beer and the rest.
FADE OUT.
