The Scientific Management Perspective covers the period of 1890 to 1940 and originates from the book published by Dr. Frederick Winslow Taylor in March, 1911 and called "The Principles of Scientific Management". As a prominent leader of this management theory, Tailor believed and declared that the general set of rules, laws and principles can be applied to organize the working process effectively, instead of relying completely on workers’ initiative. He came up with the four major principles underlying the scientific management approach (Taylor, 1911):
Continuously cooperate and monitor each staff member to ensure that the tasks are completed according to all principles of effective work.
Therefore, the main advice of Frederick Winslow Taylor would be to use scientific principles, accurate measurements and constant checks to guarantee the best possible work performance.
Today, managers start paying more attention to building long-term relationships with customers, so they switch to applying the service management concept rather than scientific management approach. The main aim of a company is to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage which implies not only satisfying the customer needs, but providing him with the level of service better than the competitors can offer or even the one he never expected to get. Therefore, business tends to sacrifice a short-term gain in productivity and if it allows to provide the customer with the top-notch service (Grönroos, 1994).
