Plagiarism is defined as the act of stealing and using someone else’s words, thoughts and ideas as one’s own and using them for their own purpose. When some other person’s work is copied off without giving them credit for it, it is also considered plagiarism. It is also an act of fraudulence. Someone has prewritten work comes under the copyright laws. If one does not put the original writer’s work in quotation marks then forgets to cite it as well, then it is rendered as cheating on the part of that writer (Plagiarism.org, 2014). All work is copyright protected and until and unless the person using that work for their own writing does not credit the original author in their work, that work will be considered plagiarized.
Higher education is a platform where a lot of writing is required by students, and they need to be aware of submitting original, authentic work. Although they know and agree that plagiarism is wrong, yet many are, however, unaware of the rules of incorporating another’s work, they have problems in understanding a foreign language, time restraints and sometimes lack the knowledge about the rules of plagiarism (Eret and Gokmenoglu, 2010).
In my experience as well, there have been students who have had difficulty in writing research papers so they chose to copy and paste work from websites and books in hopes of not getting caught and they did not even consider checking the rules for quoting another person’s work in their paper. So the professor always found out because it was always easy to distinguish the student’s handwritten work in comparison to the work that had been copied.
Plagiarism is wrong because it destroys honest work on many levels, and it makes the doer a cheater as that person insincerely used someone’s hard work as their own. Writing papers should be done honestly, and plagiarism must be avoided strictly.
