Socially constructed realities are the points of views developed by the society. The society assigns names to various aspects. Once an aspect has been named, a new significant meaning occurs in the society in some objective sense. The society tends to propagate such identities making them powerful as each person tend to defend the classification or the privileges assigned to them. Moreover, most people tend to internalize the label attached to them without questioning the authenticity of the names. Therefore, it becomes very difficult for one to criticize such privileges.
Lacking privilege is a liability to the person or the group of individuals affected. The society tends to view individuals as well as groups of individuals based on what the general society has labeled them. From such, the resources in the community are in some cases shared depending on one’s privileges. It is evident that the highly educated are favored in most job applications as opposed to the less privileged. The same case applies if a disabled person is preferred over the others simply because of the disability. In most communities, the political demand for considering the diverse needs of the members of the society tend to make particular categories of people favored over the other. In the event one lack privileges in a certain sense, therefore, the person misses the opportunities. However, the lack of privilege is subjective to whoever is interpreting what privileges means.
Considering that privileges results from the community and are propagated in the cultural, social, and economic sense, what are some of the examples of the privileges assigned to you? Do you think these privileges benefit you in any particular way?
