Data collection defines the gathering and storage of information that contains variables that are to be analyzed. The objective is usually to get a statistical understanding of the relationship between certain features of interest in a population through inference from the sample properties.
The research study under consideration is a case study to establish an appropriate site location for a prosperous neighborhood center in Madison. The survey technique utilized is secondary data collection. The survey technique is appropriate in this case because we are considering Goodman community center that has been in existence since 1948 and it has undergone radical alterations in its name, organization structure and funding. Secondary data collection will yield information rich sample that could be important in determining the best option for expansion of the community center. Secondary data collection also requires minimal time to complete and as such it allows the researcher to focus on other factors related to the study. This is especially the case in this study since a wide range of variables are being considered (Jupp, & Sapsford, 2006).
Secondary data collection is appropriate in cases where there is available and current studies conducted in the area of interest and also when time and resources are limited. Primary data collection is however preferred because the researcher gets a better understanding of the variables of interest in the process of data collection. It is also appropriate because the credibility of the data collected. Secondary data is limited because the researcher may have been interested in other variables and as such the variables of interest in the current study might not have been captured as expected. There is also the possibility that the data collected in secondary data was not collected in a professional manner (Jupp, & Sapsford, 2006).
