In the introduction of View from Inside, Wendy Watriss gives a restively comprehensive overview of the history of the Middle East North African regions on the topics surrounding their settlement, their religions and spiritual beliefs, their cultural changes, and the globalization of their art. She also explains the organization of the book and stresses the importance of the contributions of modern Arab artists.
In the chapter entitled “On Art and Photography: A Situation Report” by Karin Adrian von Roques, the subject of the photography by Arabs. Starting with Aristotle and the camera obscura (18) and working her way to current times, von Roques outlines the presence of photography in Arab countries. She mentions that Western tourists have influenced the use of camera and how the Islam ban of recreating images shaped the photography scene in the Middle East and Northern Africa (18). She exemplified how the absence of photographic images in Arab countries held back the development of the art as well.
An additional interesting discussion penned by von Roques is her claim that the colonization of Arab states and a “stronger economic interest in the use of the Orient’s resources” increased, among other arts, the demand for Arab photography (23).
Furthermore, von Roques spends a great deal of time delineating several specific Arab artists, most of which have a primary medium of photography, and the struggle they have faced and continue to face regarding the acceptance of their art as equal to that of Western, or Occidental artists.
