Water is among the essential products that help a living thing survive in the day to day lives. The basic use of water is drinking. It helps release the thirst and hydrate the body. It is impossible to live without water for several days. Water plays a major role in the industrial world such as cleaning, moistening and irrigation. Currently, water covers two-thirds of the world but not all of it is safe for use. As technology and industrialization continues, water gets more polluted by the day. Water serves as a waste disposal method to industries. However, harmful chemicals contaminate the water and tags along a string of diseases such as cholera. The worst of it is overpopulated areas get affected the most from outbreaks.
Water pollution is the destruction of natural water sources through physical, chemical, radioactive ways (Hogan par 1). Close to 50 million people die annually due to water pollution. Majority of the people come from Africa and Asia; two major continents that record a high number of overpopulated areas. For instance, 75 percent of people living in China lack access to unpolluted water for their daily use. As stated earlier, most of the pollution comes from human beings’ faults but nature plays a small part in the contamination. Severe storms, volcanic eruptions and heavy downpour bring about contamination of water. Overpopulated areas suffer the most as they have to scramble for the few resources they can get their hands on. It is not their wish to take such chances; circumstances make them do it.
Living in overpopulate areas means one has to live with the adverse conditions. One of the major characteristics of overpopulated areas is the pollution. Waste materials such as leftover food, plastics, papers and other pollutants lie around every corner in the area (Hogan par 3). The combination of the waste produces a bad stench which affects the air. When it rains, the water collects the waste products and directs them to natural resources nearby. The water acts as a transport agent for the harmful chemicals which people take. Small children play around with the water, mostly barefoot and contact serious diseases like cholera, bilharzia among others. Women draw water from these sources and use it for domestic use. They expose themselves to serious chemicals and at the same time bring more harm to their families.
However, non-governmental organizations intervened and came up with solutions to help people get access to clean water. The first stage is cleaning up the area to avoid more contamination of the water (Peterson par 4). People can have a pit where they can throw their rubbish. Treating water before using it will guarantee safe water. One can clean the water using chlorine, boiling and distillation. All these methods are affordable and effective. Recently, people use old clean plastic bottles to store water and expose them to sunlight for some hours to kill the microorganism before consumption. Tapping rainwater has been a technology that began years ago and proved to be effective. However, rainwater has some contamination in it which makes it acidic. However, there are ways to make it clean and safe for consumption.
Water pollution is a major catastrophe to living things. Without its control, there will be a loss of lives and depreciation of living things such as animals. Clean water depreciates with time due to the advanced effects of pollution in conjunction with global warming. However, the continued concern towards the depreciation will see a change of direction.
