According to American Psychological Association, Trauma is an emotional feedback to a terrifying experience and events such as accident and natural disasters. One can experience prolonged reactions such as strange emotions, flashbacks, and headaches or nausea. Such feelings often disturb daily conduct of an individual which affects routine chores and even behavior. However, with the help of psychologists, such individuals can comfortably find ways of handling and managing such emotions.
Adriana’s emotions have been solely motivated by what she experienced in her past years. Such emotions have driven her to the extent that she is very disturbed and frustrated and cannot erase such feelings of derailed future and meaningfulness of life Crow (1977). She has gone ahead and desired to have even died. (Collins, Taylor & Skokan, 1990, pp. 263-285). Her past experiences do not give a peaceful mind whatsoever, despite going to church and being advised to forget and move on she still thinks of her lost family and Rwanda killings.
Adriana showed behavioral responses having been offered the chance to be flown to US; she thought that she has escaped the ordeal and what her country was subjected. But still she could not forget the noxious event quickly Crow (1977). It took time up to thirteen years but, still she was emotionally bothered.
Cognitive responses showed by the victim include; transgression, threat and loss of the close family members. She was so much obsessed with what happened. These eat into her time and mind that she was always pondering over them, and she couldn’t do anything in a decent and expected way. As much as she is settled down now, she feels that all is well but still lacks some things, where is my family? Are my kids being mistreated? All these run through her mind.Adriana indeed was a survivor in the Rwanda massacre which claimed several lives. At her troubled home, she couldn’t get sigh of relief since, she lived amidst worries. She was not comfortable at all. At her thirteen year of refuge, she was deeply ingrained with worry, she ever pondered of the experiences which were horrifying. It affected her lifestyle and the way she did her activities. She couldn’t easily copy to new life and stage of recovery since she was disturbed. She could do a number of activities at a moment so as to forget or get focused on things that would not remind her of the past. Though her colleagues did assist her to handle emotions, but she couldn’t see the essence of all these because she lost the gist of living happily and covering what happened. Though the guidance of Church Minister, she was able to recover. The counselor’s advice has kept her going in that she kept on reminding her to move on despite challenges. Ultimately, through her help Adriana would recover and live happily.
In conclusion, trauma is such is such a challenging emotion that individuals face either through personal experiences or natural disasters. It eats into emotions either physically, socially and politically and if not managed it can lead to insanity and death. However, through the efforts of counselors and psychologist, there is life after trauma. One can move on despite challenges experienced in past and live happily.
