Beverly Buchanan realized that the images she photographed in her surrounds had deeper meaning in that it represented the people who built them. Her artworks became an offshoot of the photographs. Thus, these sculptures, such as Richard’s Home, for one, symbolize the people who built and lived in these shacks. It is not just the building that was created, but it represented the “energy and the spirit of its creator.” This particular sculpture not only represents the collapse of Richard’s home in the north, but also the one he built in the South. It is therefore a representational piece.
Each house, as seen in this artwork, is in fact a portrait of the person, or families who lived in them. Buchanan not only created sculptures, but she also used oil crayons (pastels) on paper. She also used the same material on the wood she used to create the sculpture. This is a representation of the homes built by homeless people in the USA.
