The matrix of domination was defined as “the interlocking system of oppression based on race, class, gender, and sexuality” (Ore, 2011, p. 16; cited in Anderson, 2013). In an article which explains Patricia Hill Collins’ thought on the matix of domination, it was asserted that “depending on the context, an individual may be an oppressor, a member of an oppressed group, or simultaneously oppressor and oppressed” . Specifically, Collins mentioned the term matrix of domination, to wit: “race, class, and gender constitute axes of oppression that characterize Black women's experiences within a more generalized matrix of domination” . As such, from these assertions, it was evident that society responds also according to context. Policymakers allegedly design regulations averting overt discrimination; yet, silently accepting evident and continued prejudice according to steroetyped beliefs. Despite promotion of equality and human rights, contemporary society still exhibits gross marginalization of people based on race, ethnic and cultural orientation. Likewise, sexuality is still a controversial concern were members of the LGBT community continue to fight for equal rights and acceptance in exhibiting preferred behavior. Collins also expounded on multiple levels of domination, resisting matrix of domination, as well as black women being considered as agents of knowledge who enhance awareness on the challenges faced regarding discrimination and the matrix of domination . Finally, identity politics could be effective responses to domination through collective efforts of members. As emphasized, “while individual empowerment is key, only collective action can effectively generate lasting social transformation of political and economic institutions” . It would take
intensified collective action to minimize or even eradicate this matrix of domination.
