1. Based upon the principles set forth in Stephen R. Covey's The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, the first habit that applies to our physical well-being is the third habit, "Putting First Things First." The third habit is tied to time management, and the setting of priorities which helps physically manifest the fruits of habits one and two. Covey discusses the four successive generations of time management, beginning with notes and checklists, then calendars and appointment books, while the third generation focuses primarily on short-term, intermediate-, and long-term goals. However, these three generations have serious shortcomings insofar as they focus on efficiency at the expense of spontaneity and the growth of relationships. The fourth generation of time management is focuses directly on managing ourselves as opposed to merely managing just time. Covey elucidates the four quadrants to help explain how to be proactive by preventing problems and seizing opportunities. On a deeper level, seizing opportunities entails self-discipline, in order to manifest one's goals. According to Covey, the Quadrant II is directed by a paradigm of principles. A great part of managerial skill and time management involves the art of delegating responsibilities to others, a process of "letting go" which, in turn, helps others develop their effectiveness and efficiency.
According to Covey, the seventh habit is the ongoing practice of renewing the four dimensions of our nature, the first of which is our physical nature. This requires giving attention and nurturing to our physical bodies in the form of proper care, such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, personal hygiene, and sleep hygiene. These are all parts of the whole that help "sharpen the saw", as Covey puts it, enabling us to be flexible, strong, and well-conditioned. This habit is especially important as it also strengthens our Habit One "muscle of proactivity", preventing us from reacting to external forces that prevent us from engaging in this priority. This habit, in turn, helps develop self-confidence, self-esteem, and integrity. Exercising regularly is a priority that everyone must have in order to keep their saws sharp.
