I want a wife
essay
Feminist movement marked its inspirational approach, during 1970s, which played an important role in emphasizing equalities between men and women. Many said women want female domination but, most of them want equality at home, work, life etc. Because of its concrete content regarding the situation of women in the world, Brady’s essay became very powerful in 1970s. The author played with cynicism, pathos, ethos, and logos to mark her argument that put a solid notion forward.
Women are treated as inferior and lesser important than men, reflects the main argument in the essay. Women were mostly concerned with domestic jobs like packing lunch, washing clothes, preparing food etc. Also, even there were always scarcer offers at work places that degraded the quality of efforts women made in addressing a situation. Allegations like this mark the inception of feminist movement.
Brady uses sarcasm as a tool to represent and validate her argument. For instance, the example of her male friend (divorced) who want another wife reflects the use of sarcasm, making the content of the essay more concrete and interesting that grabs reader’s attention. The tone used by the author establishes a representative ambience that makes better arguments and assures the readers agreement of the concerns articulated. The views provided by Brady represent the day-today struggle of a wife that constructs a narrow space for her to mark her (valuable) presence.
One of the essential rhetoric strategies employed by the author could be observed while addressing sexual relationship between a wife and a husband. Husbands are dominant and perform only when they are in mood otherwise not. The author has expressed the inferiority that a wife senses as far as sexual relationship is concerned between them. This situation is an example of pathos.
It is quite observable that the author has penned down the atrocities done by husbands over their wives, making them work all the time even their personal and professional work. There is not even a single sentence that could be in favour of the husbands or any favour that a husband does for his wife.
