The alliance’s mission statement according to Alliance for a Healthier Generation website is: ‘To reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits’ (www.healthiergeneration.org/about_us). The Alliance for a Healthier Generation was founded by the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association (www.healthiergeneration.org/about_us). The Alliance works with companies, schools, community organizations, families and healthcare professionals to help change systems and circumstances that result in healthier children. By transforming environments and other systems, the alliance creates a difference in children’s health and making it even better. The company empowers different individuals who influence the home, community, industrial, health facility and school environments by providing them with easy access to exceptional resources and science-based practices. The capacity to empower people is aimed at creating a movement that assists in transforming the different environments within which children spend most of their time in healthier environments that promote sustainable lifestyles.
Primarily, the alliance is more concerned about the school environment because it is where children spend most of their time. The Alliance runs the Healthy Schools Program that is evidence-based and helps in building healthier school environments. The program is currently instituted in over 27,000 schools across all the states (www.healthiergeneration.org/about_us). However, the Alliance also runs an Out-of-School Time Framework that combines best practices of the alliance and healthy eating habits. Their practices also include promoting physical activity standards t help in directing and guiding the society in changing areas where children spend their time when out of school. More significantly, the alliance also engages companies from different industries to help systematically in improving access to physical activity, healthier beverages and foods for children and their families. Such action is facilitated by forming successful agreements with healthcare, food, beverages, snacks, dairy and fitness industries to provide healthy products for families. Further, the alliance also gives healthcare practitioners strong incentives to help avert weight gain in individuals.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation depends principally on donations as its primary source of revenue (www.healthiergeneration.org/about_us). Outsourcing revenue helps the alliance to involve the society considerably in creating a better place for the future generation. Despite the fact that donations come in handy, the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association also provide the necessary resources to help in the running of the alliance’s activities and operations. Remarkably, a look at the alliance’s mission statement reveals that in order for children to develop lifelong health habits, they must be empowered by first reducing the prevalence of obesity. The empowerment is much more successful when the influencing factors are included in the programs. The influencing factors make up the whole society at large. Hence, through donations, the society participates in the empowerment and helps facilitate the programs. The same relates to the kind of activities and programs that the Alliance runs in schools, out of schools, in healthcare facilities and with companies in different industrial settings.
Considerably, once the company involves the society in its programs, then it is automatic that the public interest will be generated. The Alliance believes that in order to create healthy environments, groups, systems and individuals must work together. By encouraging people to participate through donations, the alliance plays a leading role in promoting children’s health. The public interest is facilitated especially when the alliance takes the initiative of forming agreements with producer companies in the foods and healthcare industries to produce healthy products for families and their children. It is within the public interest to ensure that products for consumption are of the right standards and support the need to lead a healthy life.
